With boundless joy, we announce the testament of beneficence that YouthZone has recently been honored with – a 24-month grant of $253,421 given by The Colorado Health Foundation. This generous grant is earmarked to bolster “The Space,” a critical resource in our community – an LGBTQIA+ youth peer-to-peer support group that encourages acceptance, understanding, and shared experiences.

Operating every week from locations in Rifle, Glenwood Springs, and Basalt, these peer groups offer an invaluable touchstone for LGBTQIA+ youth aged 12-18 years. No registration is required, and all gatherings are completely free of charge indeed – we even throw in food and drinks. Exciting, isn’t it?

Creating a safe, inclusive environment for young people grappling with identity and acceptance issues is pivotal. Our LGBTQIA+ peer groups are designed to alleviate feelings of isolation and alienation, fostering a sense of community and support among attendees. It’s a forum where they can share experiences, learn, and potentially kickoff ventures into advocacy work – all while promoting healthier community attitudes towards gender and sexuality.

The Space is a haven where LGBTQIA+ youths can freely express themselves, feeling safe and welcome. Our experienced facilitator, Janet Gordon M.Ed LPC, along with YouthZone’s Direct Service Staff, is on hand to guide and listen, ensuring everyone feels heard and seen. Janet’s 20 years of therapy experience and strength-focused approach, make her a reliable support figure, fostering strength and hope within our young attendees.

At YouthZone’s The Space, our ethos rests in empowerment and acceptance. We work towards reducing the stigma associated with the LGBTQIA+ community, fostering an environment where every youth feels comfortable and welcome – a sanctuary where they can truly be themselves. Our ultimate goal is to create a safe, supportive space for all the youths, instilling in them the self-belief and acceptance they so deserve.
